Make Slightly Crooked Teeth Look Straight With Dental Veneers
Dr. Doug McDermid is so interested in improving the beauty of smiles that he has completed special instruction in esthetics at the New York Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry. Whether you get dental veneers from him or Dr. Rose K. Dhillon, we’ll be happy to explain some of the many benefits of dental veneers.
As suggested above, using dental veneers as “instant orthodontics” does not actually straighten teeth – instead, the treatment makes slightly crooked teeth appear straight. Using dental veneers in this way only works for patients whose teeth are mildly misaligned.
Dental veneers are thin shells of tooth-colored material that completely cover the front surface of teeth to conceal cosmetic flaws. We offer two varieties of material for dental veneers:
- Traditional all-porcelain dental veneers, which closely resemble your natural teeth and typically require the removal of some of your enamel to be placed
- e.max dental veneers, which also look very convincing but are thinner than porcelain, so they sometimes do not require any enamel removal
We will review your specific goals and the various perks of each of the two materials with you to help you make your decision. One thing you may want to keep in mind is that, in some cases, e.max dental veneers can be placed in a single visit. That said, both options have their respective advantages to consider.
Regardless of which material you choose, the procedure will be pretty similar. So you’ll know what to expect, we will explain the steps before we begin, but for now, here’s a basic overview of a dental veneers treatment process:
- We will carefully measure your teeth to design your dental veneers and plan the procedure
- We will have your dental veneers made to precise specification
- If necessary, we will make room for your dental veneers by removing some of your enamel
- Once your teeth are prepped and ready, we will bond your dental veneers firmly in place
- To ensure your dental veneers look as good as possible, we will make any final adjustments to them
If we suspect you may experience discomfort, we may provide an anesthetic to help numb sensation.
With proper care, dental veneers can last for many years. They are also fairly easy to take care of because they can be treated just like your natural teeth. You just need to maintain good oral hygiene habits and visit us for routine dental cleanings and exams.
Along with providing the look of straight teeth, dental veneers can cover up many other smile flaws, including:
- Small cracks
- Chips
- Irregularly shaped teeth
- Small gaps between teeth
- Stains and/or discoloration
If your alignment issues are too significant for dental veneers to be a good option for you, we also offer a variety of other orthodontic options, including short-term orthodontics. We’ll assess your case and help you determine the best course of action.
To improve your overall experience, we offer various comfort options, including televisions and headphones to entertain and distract you while we work.

Learn Some Reasons Orthodontics Can Improve Oral Health
Typically, when people think of straightening their crooked teeth with orthodontics, the main benefit they think of is cosmetic. People can’t wait to have a straight set of teeth and stop feeling so self-conscious about their alignment issues.
We’ve even heard some people say that they were so embarrassed about their crooked teeth that they actually trained themselves to smile with their lips fully or partially closed to conceal their misaligned teeth. Many of our patients have mentioned that once they get their teeth straightened they actually have to “unlearn” this behavior.
But cosmetic perks are far from the only reason you should consider straightening your crooked teeth. You could also benefit from improved oral health as well.
Straight teeth are easier to brush thoroughly. You won’t have to pay close attention to the different angles that your tooth surfaces are at and adjust the angle of your toothbrush accordingly. Instead, you’ll be able to move your toothbrush in small circles across all of the teeth in your mouth.
In some cases, teeth are so crooked that they overlap, making it pretty much impossible to clean the surfaces of the teeth where they touch. But after an orthodontic treatment, you’ll be able to brush and floss with ease.
Speaking of flossing, cleaning between teeth is also much easier to do when they are straight. The gaps between your teeth will be consistently spaced so you’ll be able to guide the floss between them much easier.
Before straightening their teeth, many of our patients have even mentioned that they used to fray their floss quickly because their teeth are so tightly spaced or overlapping that they have to force the floss past where their teeth touch. Others have mentioned that this can even make their gums bleed because they have to push the floss down so hard they accidentally hit their gumline.
Easier cleaning is not the only way that orthodontic procedures can help improve your oral health. You also won’t have to worry about food getting stuck in your smile as much! If you’ve been living with crooked teeth long enough, you can probably see why this is such a big deal.
Sure, no matter how straight your teeth are, certain foods – like popcorn, potato chips, and the skin of apples – will occasionally get stuck between them. But with straighter teeth, this probably will not happen as much. You may even re-discover your love of foods you’ve been avoiding!
Stop waiting to get the gorgeous, healthy set of teeth you’ve always dreamed of! You may be intimidated by having us perform tooth extractions on your wisdom teeth, especially if you’re of a certain age. But hopefully, it will put you at ease some to know that wisdom teeth removal is a fairly routine procedure that many dentists perform. As a matter of fact, an article published by the Canadian Dental Association noted that the procedure is one of the most commonly conducted forms of oral surgery in Canada.
We’ve found that it helps if patients understand why they might need a particular dental treatment. To learn some of the reasons why your or your child’s wisdom teeth may need to come out for the sake of overall oral health, read more below.
Learn About Wisdom Teeth Removal And Reasons For It
Everyone has a unique set of teeth. And with 32 individual teeth in just about every smile, a lot of complications can occur. One category of dental issues is when wisdom teeth start causing problems for patients.
Wisdom teeth are so called because they typically start to come in during a person’s late teens or early twenties. They are also known as “third molars” because they are the third set of molars to come in, after your other adult teeth.
Some patients have no problems at all when their wisdom teeth begin to come in. There are a number of factors that determine this, including jaw shape and size. But, frequently, wisdom teeth will need to be removed.
One reason we may recommend a wisdom teeth removal is if your wisdom teeth are coming in crooked. This could result in a fair amount of pain, but also, it could mean that your wisdom teeth are putting pressure against or even damaging your adjacent teeth. If there’s already not enough room in your jaw, wisdom teeth could make it even worse and lead to overcrowding.
Depending on how crooked your wisdom teeth are coming in, they may not cause that much discomfort for you initially. But over time, they could put push against your other teeth enough to have widespread effects on how straight your teeth are. Your smile could be healthy and straight up until your wisdom teeth start to come in crooked.
Wisdom teeth may also need to be removed because they could complicate the process of straightening the rest of your teeth. For example, if you are about to undergo an orthodontic procedure to straighten your teeth, wisdom teeth could get in the way. This could mean you’d have to postpone your teeth-straightening treatment until the wisdom teeth can be removed.
Wisdom teeth can also become impacted when they are erupting. A tooth being impacted basically means that it gets stuck below your gums for some reason or another. As mentioned above, this could occur because there is not enough room for the wisdom teeth. Your third molars could also be coming in crooked and get stuck. This, in turn, could cause painful swelling of the gums.
To determine if you could benefit from wisdom teeth removal, we will check when you visit us every six months for your routine dental cleaning and exam. By taking a simple X-ray, we’ll be able to see your wisdom teeth and assess if there is enough room in your jaw for them to come in properly.
If we do perform a wisdom teeth removal, we will do everything we can to make your procedure as pleasant as possible. In most cases, we will recommend using dental sedation during a wisdom teeth removal.
Following a wisdom teeth removal, we will explain some simple aftercare steps that will help you avoid dry socket, infections, and other complications that could occur.
